Facebook | Who are your friends?

Posted by: Robert Ede | Comments (0)

I’m sure many of my readers are also Facebook friends, but I have recently had a few strange invitations to be friends with either people I don’t know at all or people I knew at school.

I have to be honest I wonder what motivates people to seek me out and ask me to be friends.  With the complete strangers I find that often times they have something like a thousand friends, and this makes me suspect they are either complete psychos, very sad with no mates, or spammers.

When it comes to old “School friends” I am equally as skeptical. I admit I do have one school friend where I did accept the invitation, but we were genuinely friends at school.

If I am truthful my time at secondary school was not a pleasant period in my life, and I was not only the unpopular geek, I felt like my teachers hated me too.  I wasn’t good at “Sports”, meaning I didn’t play rugby, football like my brother.  I did (and still do) play badminton, however my PE teachers didn’t consider this a proper sport.

It probably explains why I was depressed (very topical at the moment in the news) something which continued through college.  Having said that my college days were significantly better than my school days, and I made some good friends at college and they are still friends to this day, equally my college tutors had much more interest and focus in helping me succeed in my work.

So what makes people that used to be either ambivalent toward me at best, or belligerent toward me at worst, want to seek me out now?  Is it some sort of desire to see how they measure up to me?  Do want to see that if I am married, or if I am still a spotty awkward geek that I was in my teenage years?  Do they care about what sort of job I have, what sort of car I drive or some other social measure?

The cynical side of me says that they don’t really want to be my friend, but I am probably being a bit unfair.  I am sure that these people have grown and into mature adults with a good sense of how to treat people, but why would I want reopen that door?   I certainly have no desire to compare my success in life with someone I knew over 18 years ago.  My sense of self worth comes from a different place, not by how others judge me.

I have a very good job as a regional IT leader for a global company.  It is work that I am passionate about and flies in the face of those teachers who always thought I wasn’t bright enough to work in IT.

So if you’re one of those people, don’t feel bad I’m over it and I’ve moved on and you should do the same.  I have some very close friends, a lovely wife and some wonderful children.

By all means send me a friend invitation, but be honest with yourself about why before you do it.

Disney | Hotel, Facilities, and Food

Posted by: Robert Ede | Comments (0)

Ok so I’ve told you there was a lot of fun stuff which happened on holiday, but there were some bits which irritated me quite a bit too, so let me start with the Hotel.

The first time I had any signs of a possible issue was when some grumpy ass American dude was ranting about his room key being wrong about 3 times and how he’d walked in on somebody else because they’d given him the wrong room.

As you can see from the main reception area it looks very grand, but in my opinion this is not a top notch hotel when you consider what the rooms were like.  The bathroom was so tiny you could barely turn around, and if I had to rate it I’d level it with something like a Travel Lodge in the UK.  It was OK, but not great.

The maid service always seemed to be doing our room out when we wanted to use the room, again not very helpful after we’d come back from a park and want a dip in the pool.

There were 5 pools and all were clean, and safe.  Towels and life vests (for the kids) were available from the pool hut and we didn’t seem to have a problem finding any sun loungers either.  There was also a fake beach by the lake next to the pool area.  The Cabana bar was just next to one of the lap pools.

So now to another annoying bit, as this hotel seems to have some major conferences. Dad and me were almost trampled to death at the bar as one of these conferences emptied at 5pm.  The pool was also closed for a couple of private events as well which I thought was out of order, considering we’d paid for access to those facilities.

Oh and if you’re vegetarian FORGET IT!  You’re screwed, if you’re vegan, you double screwed.  They say on all the menus that dietary requirements can be accommodated, but when you ask a waiter or waitress about vegetarian options you get this blank look like you’re from another planet.   The Disney parks weren’t much better and just the sight of people walking around gnawing on massive Turkey legs made me want to hurl.

I did eat something though, as there was a kind of buffet restaurant which had a choice of Greek Salad.  Essentially leaves, with a very salty and large portion of feta cheese.  Baked Potato (no problem there), Pizza (which I had a lot of), and what tasted like Kraft mac & cheese out of a packet.  To top it off it was all very very expensive.

The nicest cheap meal I ate was from Subway, and to get this we had to escape the Disney resort and head toward the Outlet shops by taxi.  The good old subway veggie patty!! Yummy!!

The most expensive and nicest meal I had was from the Italian restaurant at the Swan hotel, and this was mushroom risotto.   The atmosphere wasn’t very family oriented in that particular place, and it felt a bit too snooty for my liking, it seemed like we’d been seated in an area that put us out of the way.

The most entertaining place we ate was called Spoodles which is on the Boardwalk as you head toward Epcot.  We had a waiter called Wayne, and he was just hysterical, even when he threw desert over some lady at a neighbouring table.  Spoodles has a great feel to it, and serves all kinds of Mediterranean style food (again found a veggie option).   Wayne was great with the kids, and a complete riot!  On top of that my meal was really nice there too, and tasted like proper food.  We also noticed that the service was well coordinated and there was a definite team working atmosphere between the staff.  I left a bit extra on top of their normal gratuity.

So overall not very impressed with the hotel, although it could have been a lot worse, compared to some of the off resort motel/hotels I saw when we ventured out.  For me the food was either junk, or very excellent and my choices were limited.

At magic kingdom I got a bit stressed and fed up because I was hungry and there was no veggie food to be found anywhere.  In the end I just sat down in the shade and tried to calm down.  I think everything at that point was just starting to piss me off, and I was on Disney overdose.

At Epcot I had some Chinese food which nearly made me throw up and it was basically boiled rice and what I can only assume was very salty cabbage.

At Animal Kingdom I ate crisps, and at Typhoon lagoon I just had french fries.

I have yet compose my feedback to Disney, the Hotel and the agent, but I feel sure the weekend will provide me with sufficient time to compose my gripes in fuller details.

Disney | Magic Kingdom

Posted by: Robert Ede | Comments (0)

Yes you’re going to get my holiday by instalments! I can’t be writing some long war and peace length article.

Disney’s Magic Kingdom was one of the best parks we visited at Walt Disney World.   There were a lot of different things to do and see and I’ve  included a bit of video which I  took of the Main Street USA parade.

This is more of a park for the little kids, but there are still some really great parades to see.  They are nothing short of spectacular and they take place a few times every day.

You can even have your photo taken with your favourite Disney character, as you can see from this lovely photograph.

They even sign autographs for those who want to go around the parks collecting them.  The only suggestion I would make about having your photos done is that you locate all the photo spots, try to find out the times the characters arrive, and get there early.  There is quite a line up for some of the more popular characters like Mickey.  The kids actually got bored waiting for his signature and gave up.

We took 3 separate visits to do Magic Kingdom and it is really good, but be prepared to wait in lines of people, get your fast passes early, and make sure you have good walking shoes.

Other rides such as small world, are very good for little kids and the Pirates of the Caribbean one had some very cool effects as well.

Disney | Where Dreams Come True

Posted by: Robert Ede | Comments (0)

I have just got back today from an extreme holiday at Walt Disney World in Florida, and I am completely wiped out.   The kids really enjoyed this holiday and although I didn’t initially want to go, I admit I had a bit of fun too.

As you can see from the photo I took, we went to almost all of the Disney parks, and I would recommend to anyone who doesn’t like walking to get one of those electric scooters that I saw many numerous obese American people riding around on.

We met a number of Disney characters in the park, and it was incredibly, loud, colourful, and excellent entertainment for the kids.   I must confess that I have never walked and queued up so much in my entire life!  Disney parks do have this system called “Fast Pass” which means you can go to a particular attraction at a pre-appointed time and jump straight to the head of the queue.   You can see why this is a good thing when the shorter queues are around 30 minutes, and the longest one was around 2 hours.

This is just a taster of what we did, and when I have recovered from my jet lag I shall write a bit more about my experiences in Florida.  There certainly is a lot to write about both good and bad.
